  I. Warming up

  Warming up by describing

  Good morning, class. Today we are going to talk about an interesting topic--- music. As we know, music is a kind of art of making pleasing combinations ofsounds in rhythm, harmony and counterpoint. Music can produce a lively and happyatmosphere and bring people relaxation after hard work, which can reduce thetiredness. Listening to music also makes people feel happy and nice. How many doyou know about music? Can you tell about different kinds of music? Now turn topage 33, look at the pictures, read the captions and listen to the differentkinds of music. See if you can guess which music matches with which picture.

  Have you heard about any of the famous bands in the world? List some if youcan.

  For reference: I’ve heard about “The Beatles”, “Back Street Boys”, “TheEagles”, “West life” and “Pink Floyd”.

  2.Listening, talking and sharing

  Let’s listen to some pieces of music from different bands. Work in groupsof four. Tell your group mates which band you like best. Why? Then the groupleader is to stand up and share the group idea with the class.

  For reference: I am from Group 1. Our group likes “The Beatles” best. Welike their style of performances. Listening to their performances, we will feelrelaxed, amused, and their performances make us think a lot about life.

  Do you know anything about “The Monkees”?

  For reference: “The Monkees” is a band that was first popular in the 1960sin America. Unlike most bands of the time, the Monkees were not formed by itsmembers but rather by TV producers. They were a fictional band in the TV show ofthe same name. The band was composed of Mike Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones,and Peter Tork. All the members had some musical experience. Let’s come to thereading --- The Band That Wasn’t and find more about them.

  III. Reading

  1.Reading aloud to the recording

  Now please listen and read aloud to the recording of the text THE BAND THATWASN’T. Pay attention to the pronunciation of each word and the pauses withineach sentence. I will play the tape twice and you shall read aloud twice,too.

  2.Reading and underlining

  Next you are to read and underline all the useful expressions orcollocations in the passage. Copy them to your notebook after class ashomework.

  Talk about scientist.

  T: Hi, morning, class. Nice to see you on this special day, the day whenyou become a senior two grader. I am happy to be with you helping you with yourEnglish. Today we are to read about a certain scientist. But first let’s definethe word “scientist”. What is a scientist?

  A scientist is a person who works in science, trying to understand how theuniverse or other things work.

  Scientists can work in different areas of science. Here are some examples:Those that study physics are physicists. Those that study chemistry arechemists. Those that study biology are biologists.

  Step II

  Ask the students to try the quiz and find out who knows the most.

  T: There are some great scientific achievements that have changed theworld. Can you name some of them? What kind of role do they play in the field ofscience? Do these achievements have anything in common? Match the inventionswith their inventors below before you answer all these questions.

  II. Pre-reading

  Step I

  Get the students to discuss the questions on page 1 with their partners.Then ask the students to report their work. Encourage the students to expresstheir different opinions.

  1. What do you know about infectious diseases?

  Infectious diseases can be spread to other people. They have an unknowncause and need public health care to solve them. People may be exposed toinfectious disease, so may animals, such as bird flu,AIDS, SARS are infectiousdiseases. Infectious diseases are difficult to cure.

  2. What do you know about cholera?

  Cholera is the illness caused by a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae. Itinfects people’s intestines(肠), causing diarrhea and leg cramps (抽筋).The mostcommon cause of cholera is by someone eating food or drinking water that hasbeen contaminated(污染) with the bacteria. Cholera can be mild(不严重的) or evenwithout immediate symptoms(症状), but a severe case can lead to death withoutimmediately treatment.

  3. Do you know how to prove a new idea in scientific research?

  Anybody might come out with a new idea. But how do we prove it inscientific research? There are seven stages in examining a new idea inscientific research. And they can be put in the following order. What orderwould you put the seven in? Just guess.
