Theword X in the passage is closest in meaning to...看起来是很简单,只要__知道一个词汇的基本含义就可以做对,但是要准备的词汇范围又很大。而OG中对于词汇题的解释就是,there is “no listofwords” that must be tested.这句话就告诉考生:没有所谓的大纲词汇可供参考,因为根本就没有大纲,考试中要考查到的单词可能是来自牛津字典或朗文字典中的任何一个单词,所以范围很大。另外,OG中的解释还有一句aword might have more than one meaning, but in the reading passage, only one ofthose meaning is relevant.

Archaeological discoveries have led some scholars to believe that the firstMesopotamian inventors of writing may have been a people the later Babylonianscalled Subarians. According to tradition, they came from the north and movedinto Uruk in the south. By about 3100 B.C., they were apparently subjugated insouthern Mesopotamia by the Sumerians, whose name became synonymous with theregion immediately north of the Persian Gulf, in the fertile lower valleys ofthe Tigris and Euphrates. Here the Sumerians were already well established bythe year 3000 B.C. They had invented bronze, an alloy that could be cast inmolds, out of which they made tools and weapons. They lived in cities, and theyhad begun to acquire and use capital. Perhaps most important, the Sumeriansadapted writing (probably from the Subarians) into a flexible tool ofcommunication.

Archaeologists have known about the Sumerians for over 150 years.Archaeologists working at Nineveh in northern Mesopotamia in the mid-nineteenthcentury found many inscribed clay tablets. Some they could decipher because thelanguage was a Semitic one (Akkadian), on which scholars had already beenworking for a generation. But other tablets were inscribed in another languagethat was not Semitic and previously unknown. Because these inscriptions madereference to the king of Sumer and Akkad, a scholar suggested that the newlanguage be called Sumerian.

But it was not until the 1890's that archaeologists excavating incity-states well to the south of Nineveh found many thousands of tabletsinscribed in Sumerian only. Because the Akkadians thought of Sumerian as aclassical language (as ancient Greek and Latin are considered today), theytaught it to educated persons and they inscribed vocabulary, translationexercises, and other study aids on tablets. Working from known Akkadian topreviously unknown Sumerian, scholars since the 1890's have learned how to readthe Sumerian language moderately well. Vast quantities of tablets in Sumerianhave been unearthed during the intervening years from numerous sites.
