The situation that resulted in my grandfather’s not being able to studyengineering was that his father needed help on the farm.

My grandfather couldn’t study engineering because his father needed helpon the farm.

There were 25 cows on the farm that my grandfather had to milk every day.Itwas hard work for my grandfather.

My grandfather worked hard. He had to milk 25 cows on the farm everyday.

My grandfather worked hard milking 25 cows daily.

Dairy cows were raised on the farm, which was located 100 kilometers fromthe nearest university and was in an area that was remote.

The dairy farm was located in a remote area, 100 kilometers to the nearestuniversity.

In the fall, not only did the cows have to be milked, but also the hay wasmowed and stacked by my grandfather’s family.

In the fall, my grandfather’s family not only milked the cow but alsomowed and stacked the hay.

My grandfather didn’t have time to stand around doing nothing withhis school friends.

Stand around doing nothing其实可以用一个动词来表达,即loiter:My grandfather didn’t havetime to loiter with his school friends.

Profits from the farm were not large. Sometimes they were too small tomeet the expenses of running a farm. They were not sufficient to pay for auniversity degree.

Profits from the farm were sometimes too small to meet operationalexpenses, let alone pay for a university degree.

In a word, studying only limited courses will be supportive for students’physical and mental growth as well as their future careers.

High school students are required to study many different subjectsat same time or they should study only three or four subject at a time, which doyou agree?

As for me, studying only three or four subjects appears to be a betterchoice and the listed reasons and examples will support what I believe.

To begin with, current young students have been under enormous pressure, doing great harm to their growth, and there is no need to impose too muchpressure on them. To be more specific, to strengthen students’ futurecompetitiveness in the society, most schools have expected to forge students’various capacities since they were young by arranging a huge number ofcurriculums. What an ordinary high school student has to experience in hisone-day school life can demonstrate how depressed and exhausted present highschool students are. Getting up as early as 6AM has become common in recent twodecades. Afterwards, a whole-day study will include various compulsory andoptional courses like Mathematics that leads to intellectual stimulation orHistory that demands students to attempt to memorize historic events andrelative effects as many as possible. When class is over, it is still far awayfrom ending one-day study since lots of assignments such as the short essays orscientific researches need to be finished. Evidently, students suffer from thehuge pressure from study, leading many of them to wear glasses at a young ageand to be drained physically and mentally everyday. Thus, students are notsupposed to be ordered to study many courses at a time.

To be followed, the inadequacy of enough leisure time will contributestudents to have no chances to engage in what they interested in. High schoolstudents are still involved in an age during which they should exploit their owninterests to decide which area they will choose when going to college in theirnear future. However, like I mentioned in the previous statement, to meet therequirements set by school; students have no option but to immerse themselves ina number of assignments and the freedom to pursue their own hobbies has beendeprived. It is known to all that interest plays a leading role in assistingpeople to choose their future career and a recent released statistic in a surveyconducted by Beijing Human Resource General Bureau indicates that approximately67 percent of college undergraduates switch their professions from theirmajor-related areas to what they are truly interested in their third year aftergraduation. In addition, many of the respondents claim that they are notsatisfied with the current educational system, requiring students to study awide range of curriculums, because it entirely downplays the importance ofcultivating students’ hobbies and they believe that the earlier students candiscover their interest, the more setbacks they can avoid when choosing futuremajors in the university and upcoming professors after graduation. A friend Iknow named Andy refused to become a mechanical engineer since he was bored tostay in the office building and finally chose to become a teacher in aeducational institute since he can apply his passion and extrovert personalityinto the profession. Accordingly, student should be given more opportunities todevelop their own hobbies to explore what they love.

Do you agree or disagree high-school students are required to study manydifferent subjects at same time or they should study only three or four subjectsat a time.

Teenagers are in the prime time of their life. What they learn in thisperiod is a huge factor in determining their whole life. To make better use ofthis valuable time, some educators advocate that students are supposed to studyas many subjects as possible at a time. However, I don’t think it is a smartmove. Instead, studying three or four subjects at a time would serve thembetter.

To begin with, only three or four subjects at a time ensure that studentshave enough time and energy to make further research in each of these fields. Itallows them to bite deeply into these subjects, thus gaining the whole pictureof a certain field in their mind rather than just a smattering of knowledge. Itis not hard to imagine what they would suffer when they have too many things intheir plate. They would find themselves wrestling with complex chemicalformulas, intertwined history events and distinctions between invertebrates andamphibians on the same very day. In consequence, they would end up withspreading themselves too thin and cannot gain a deeper understanding in any ofthe fields.

Besides, when students are allowed to choose three or four subjects at atime based on their own interest, they would performer better without under ahuge amount of mental pressure. As an old saying goes, interest is the bestteacher. When what they learn really appeal to them, they are more keen on theirschool work. On the contrary, if they are forced to learn too many subjects at atime, chances are that they not only cannot be guaranteed with good grade butalso get upset and frustrated. Things may get even worse when they find some ofthese subjects are extremely bothersome and annoying. I have experienced thesuffering. When I was in high school, history was the most difficult one for me.Those intertwined history events, exact dates of those events, and variouscomplex names of important figures involved in them just drove me crazy. Whenthe finals were just around the corner, I always burnt mid-night oil to hithistory books, feeling so tense and stressed up. So only when students spendtheir time on just three or four subjects that truly attractive to them can theyget good grade on each subject and enjoy their high-school time happily.

What cannot be denied is that there are such versatile brainiacs who canhandle with so many subjects at the same time without any difficulty. However, only a small fraction of students are in this line. For most of the students inhigh school, three or four subjects at a time are more acceptable and effectivefor their study.

To sum up, I am on the board with the idea that students will benefit morefrom taking just three or four subjects at a time.
